Cottage Doors Hinges – Forged or Cast?

Once you’ve bought your oak cottage doors the next thing you’re likely to consider is what type of hinges to use with your new doors.

There’s no question what style to use as Black Antique style hinges compliment cottage doors the best, however there are two types of Black Antique cottage door hinges available to you – hand forged hinges or cast hinges.

Hand Forged Cottage Door Hinges

This type of cottage door hinges are hand forged using steel and are an extremely strong and durable door hinge. They also have the benefit of looking more authentic when installed on cottage doors being fitted in barn conversions, cottages and other period properties as these forged hinges have the dull natural finish of forged steel. Generally hand forged door hinges are more expensive to purchase, however the additional expense is offset by the higher quality of hinge.

Cast Cottage Door Hinges

The second type of cottage door hinges available are cast hinges which are manufactured using steel which has been smelted and poured into mouldings forming a cast rather than forged hinge. This type of hinge is generally finished with a black powder coated finish which has a shiny appearance which gives a more manufactured rather than authentic appearance. Cast cottage door hinges do have the advantage of being cheaper to purchase.

No matter what you decided – forged cottage door hinges or cast cottage door hinges - Blueprint Joinery can supply what you’re looking for. For more details call us on 01691 671020 or visit us at www.blueprintjoinery.co.uk

What Are Engineered Doors

At Blueprint Joinery we can supply both Engineered and Solid Wooden Doors and we frequently are asked what the difference is between these two types of doors.

The main difference our customers see is the price with solid doors being considerable more expensive to buy than their engineered counterparts. However the price of the doors isn’t the real difference between engineered doors and solid wooden doors.

Engineered Doors

Engineered wooden doors are mass produced usually in the far east and are constructed with either softwood or chip board cores. Engineered wooden doors are veneered with their final timber finish – pine, oak, hardwood or walnut – with this veneer being less and a 1mm thick in most cases.

Engineered wooden doors have the benefits of being cheaper and cost effective along with the benefit of increased stability. As there are two materials / timbers involved in their construction, engineered doors are a lot more stable and less prone to warping or bowing than their solid wood counterparts.

Blueprint Joinery supplies a wide range of doors from X L Joinery one of the UK’s leading distrubuters of engineered doors. Visit our website for to view their range of internal doors and external doors. – www.blueprintjoinery.co.uk

Solid Wooden Doors

Solid wooden doors are constructed using solid timber with no veneers or softwood  / chipboard cores. They are generally hand made by skilled carpenters which results in a high quality wooden door but also has a higher price tag and a much longer delivery lead time – as much as 5-6 weeks depending on factory workload.

How Many Stair Spindles?

Being an online supplier of stair parts, perhaps the most frequently asked question we have is:

How many spindles do I need for my staircase and landing?

It’s a lot simplier to work out the quantity you need for your staircase refurbishment than you would think.

To work out the number of spindles needed for your staircase simply count the number of treads, multiply by two and subtract one for every newel post present on your stairs. For example a twelve tread staircase with a newel post at the bottom & the top would be:

12 x 2 = 24     less 2 = 22 spindles needed for your stairs.

To work out how many 41mm spindles needed for your landing it’s simply a case of measuring the length of the landing in millimetres then dividing by 121 to get your answer. For example 1800mm divided by 121 = 14.876 rounded up to 15 spindles. If using 32mm spindles divide by 117mm instead.

These calculations are based on staircases with pitches between 38° and 45°.
